Straight Talk on Building an Online Foundation That Actually Works

Let’s be honest — most San Marcos contractors would rather pour concrete in 103-degree heat than design a website. We know how to build houses, not homepages. But in today’s world, a good website is as essential as good framing. It’s your digital jobsite — the place where people decide if they trust you before they ever pick up the phone.

I’m not a web designer. I’m a builder. But when I decided to design our own website for Like Father Like Son Construction LLC, I approached it the same way I approach every job: plan it right, build it solid, and make sure it lasts.

Start with a Solid Foundation

Before writing a word or picking a photo, I asked myself one thing: What do people want to see when they’re looking for a contractor? The answer was simple:

  • Proof that we do quality work

  • Honesty about what we offer

  • Clear contact info

  • Real photos — no stock nonsense

So that’s where I started. No fluff, no filler, no “award-winning innovation.” Just real craftsmanship and straight talk about what we do.

Build It Like a Jobsite

A website, like a house, needs structure. The homepage is your front door. The portfolio is your show home. The About page is where people decide if they’d trust you with their project.

I made sure every page had a clear purpose:

  • Home: Who we are and what we stand for

  • Services: What we actually do (and do well)

  • Portfolio: Proof of work — photos speak louder than sales pitches

  • Contact: Simple, direct, no hoops to jump through

It’s not flashy, but it’s built right — clean navigation, honest photos, and words that reflect who we really are.

Keep It Real — People Can Tell

Contractors sometimes think they need a fancy website to compete. You don’t. You need a real one. Homeowners can spot fake reviews, stock images, and buzzwords from a mile away.

Show your actual work. Use your own words. If your crew does good work and you treat people right, your site should sound like that — confident, not corporate.

Your Website is Your New Word of Mouth

These days, most customers don’t find you by driving past a jobsite — they find you online. A good website is your handshake before the handshake.

It tells people who you are, what you stand for, and whether you’re worth calling. So build it like you build everything else: with pride, honesty, and attention to detail.

Final Thought

When a contractor designs a website, it’s not about fancy code or flashy effects — it’s about trust. If your website reflects the same values you bring to the job — honesty, integrity, and craftsmanship — then you’ve already done it right.
